about

Established London-based, multi-genre spanning UK club producer Altered Natives’ makes a bold foray into footwork for his We Buy Gold debut, the hauntingly named ‘Daddy’s Gone’ EP. After bouncing back from an unexpected (and near-fatal) heart failure last year that left him hospitalized and unable to produce for the months during his recovery, the eponymous title track, which was written immediately before the event, took on a reflective new angle,“Technically...I'm a dead man typing...walking...juking...I wasn't even aware of [my current state] until the last minute, when I was hospitalised...[It’s] a reference to my sunny disposition despite the dark twists in my life and inner demons.”

Footwork provides the template for the EP, though with an eclectic late night feel that’s distinct to the London producer’s pedigree and much closer to the deep, dark and moody sound of underground rave and techno than the ghetto house, jazzy and often soulful flavours of Chicago. Over the course of the 4 tracks bumpy junglist basslines and broken beats ride around squad car sirens, steely techno stabs and rushy build ups; elsewhere bollywood strings collide with spiky sino-grime synths, and glitchy percussive clicks overlay growling sublow science. “Every genre I've dipped my toe into throughout my evolution as Altered Natives, I've tried to put slant on it....without using too much influence from all the other artists who've paved the way before me”

With a suitably demonic original character image from East London illustrator Jiro Bevis rounding up proceedings, this exciting digital package marks the second label release of 2019 for We Buy Gold, following previous drops from Andrew Juke and Warlock
